Dr. Novak is Board Certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is licensed to practice medicine in the state(s) of Tennessee (and North Carolina). He is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand, elbow, and shoulder. He is affiliated with Summit Medical Center, Premier Orthopaedic Surgery Center, and Summit Surgery Center.

Dr. Novak completed a one-year fellowship in hand, elbow, and shoulder surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania under the direction of nationally known fellowship co-directors, Dr. Mark Baratz and Dr. Dean Sotereanos. He performed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from 2001 to 2005. He was awarded his Medical Degree in 2000, from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He achieved a Master of Science, Mechanical Engineering (Biomechanics) Degree from the University of Maryland in 1992. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 1990.

Prior to joining Premier Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, Dr. Novak was in private practice at Blue Ridge Bone & Joint in Asheville, North Carolina. Preceding his medical degree, he worked as the Research Engineer and Laboratory Manager of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Surgery. He was also a Graduate Research Assistant in the Biomechanics/Cardiac Mechanics Laboratory at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Novak has published over 30 combined journal articles, abstracts, book chapters, and book reviews in peer-reviewed journals, including prestigious journals such as Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, Journal of Hand Surgery, and Journal of Biomechanical Engineering.

While at Wake Forest University, Dr. Novak was presented with the Frank E. Pollock Academic Excellence Award three years in a row from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, received the Pfizers Scholar in Pain Management Award, and served as Resident Liaison for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery Committee on Education. Upon graduation from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he was awarded the Wayne W. Babcock Award for Excellence in Surgery. Other previous honors include membership in Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society), University of Maryland Honor Society, and scholarships including the Maryland Distinguished Scholar and Helen T. Reese Memorial Scholarships.

Dr. Novak joined Premier Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in 2008. He is a candidate-member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Novak has served as a volunteer in the Congenital Hand/Upper Extremity Outreach Clinic at the Shriners’ Hospital for Children in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the Health Care for the Homeless Medical Clinic, and at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, Resuscitation Unit.

Dr. Novak resides in Brentwood, Tennessee with his wife, Faye, and three children, Emma, Adam, and Jackson.
