Dr. McHugh grew up in Kentucky and received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of Louisville. His interest in sports medicine began while working as a strength and conditioning coach for the University’s Athletic Department. This then led him to earn a Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, after which he completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (also known as Physiatry) at The Ohio State University.

Dr. McHugh chose the specialty of Physiatry because of the emphasis on a non-operative, functional approach to the treatment of a wide assortment of injuries and medical conditions. He is able to incorporate his expertise in exercise and fitness into the specialized rehabilitation programs he prescribes for his patients. His areas of specialization include occupational and sport injuries, electrodiagnosis, and spinal injections. Dr. McHugh was again recognized by U.S. News & World Report and by Nashville Lifestyles magazine as "One of Nashville's Top Doctors" for his care of sports injuries and back pain.

During his residency, Dr. McHugh received the American Medical Association’s Leadership Award for his work with disabled athletes. He was a physician consultant for the State of Ohio Bureau of Disability Determination, Rehabilitation Services Commission, and the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation. He has also served as team physician for several professional and amateur sporting events.

Dr. McHugh is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a Diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with subspecialty certification in Pain Management. He has been a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and is a certified Exercise Specialist with the American College of Sports Medicine. He is affiliated with Centennial Medical Center, Premier Orthopaedic Surgery Center, Baptist Ambulatory Surgery Center, Centennial Surgery Center, and maintains courtesy privileges at Southern Hills Medical Center.
