Dr. Downs is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Tennessee and Mississippi. He is Board Eligible with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. His specialties include Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, and Shoulder, Knee and Elbow Surgery. He maintains privileges at Centennial Medical Center, Baptist Hospital, Saint Thomas Hospital, Premier Orthopaedic Surgery Center, Centennial Surgery Center, and Baptist Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Dr. Downs achieved a Fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He did his Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Tennessee at Memphis and at the Campbell Clinic in Memphis, Tennessee. He served his Internship in Surgery at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. He was awarded his Medical Degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, California. He graduated Magna cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee.

Dr. Downs was a Student Researcher and a Full-time Clinical Researcher in the Loma Linda University Department of Orthopaedics.

Dr. Downs was awarded the Walter E. Macpherson Award for Student Researcher of the Year at Loma Linda University, and the Bertakies and Starich award for outstanding oral presentation at the American Federation for Medical Research.
